Sony has recently released the newest version of it's professional video editing software Vegas Pro 9. On first glance, there is an immediate change in the look of the new Vegas. As they explain on their web site: "The Vegas Pro 9 user interface features a new color scheme, which provides an optically neutral environment for optimized viewing of colors and enhanced usability when working in a darkened editing booth." This may be one reason for the new color scheme, but it can't be overlooked that the new Vegas Pro 9 interface now looks surprisingly similar to the Adobe Premier CS4 interface. With the proliferation of low-cost AVCHD format video cameras on the market, along with the continued decline in HDTV prices, it would seem an easy choice that if you purchase a camera, it should be HD. YouTube now allows you to upload Hi-Def video up to 1GB in file size and up to 10 minutes long.  When choosing the embed function, you can generate code that has video automatically play in a larger window and in the HD format.  Now it may seem contrary to the commitment of this site because after all, every compilation will now bare the YouTube logo which is free advertising for them.  However, this works both ways.  Now, not only will potential clients be able to see the compilations on AVCHDClips.com, but they will pop up in YouTube searches.

I have been both a PC and a Mac user for many years.  PC owners tend to focus on the relative lower price of their machines while Mac owners point out the stability and usability of the Mac.  I for one don't think that there is a single best computer for anything.  An HDV camera, Macbook and Final Cut Express (or even iMovie) actually makes an excellent choice for entry level video.  The platform is stable, the cameras are proven and the software does exactly what you expect.  This leads me to my question:

When the first AVCHD camcorders were introduced to the public, there was a huge hole in the ability to edit the files they produced.  For as much as a year, all you could do was play back footage shot directly from the camcorder.  This gap between shooting and editing created a platform where "gurus" immediately began to predict an early demise for the AVCHD format.  Since that time, all of the major camcorder manufactures have forged ahead in producing AVCHD cameras with better imaging, higher capacities, and greater bitrates.

Rarely will the would-be hi-def video director be in the position to edit their footage on a monitor that displays in it's intended format (like a 16:9 1080p 50 inch HDTV).  This often means having to edit your project on a regular computer monitor, and then if you don't have a Blu-ray authoring platform or Blu-ray burner, you are left with an edited project that you can't redily display on your new flat panel in the living room.  You're stuck playing unedited clips right from your camera.
